CADD VOCABULARY
CADD - Computer-aided design & drafting is the use of computer systems to assist in the creation of a design.
alphabet of lines - different styles of lines used in drafting such as to show different features about an object that is drawn: hidden, object, center, etc.
angle - a figure that is formed from two lines that meet at a common place
diameter - any straight line segment that passes through the center of the circle and whose endpoints lie on the circle.
dimension - a measurable portion of space that extends in a certain direction.
drafting - to draw the preliminary sketch, version, or plan of
horizontal lines -lines that are parallel to the horizon or to a baseline
object lines - A thick, heavy line in construction drawings that outlines the structure or object.
Orthographic Projection - a way of drawing an 3D object from different directions. Usually a front, side and plan view are drawn so that a person looking at the drawing can see all the important sides.
parallel lines - In geometry, parallel lines are lines in a plane which do not meet; that is, two lines in a plane that do not intersect or touch at any point are said to be parallel.
perpendicular lines - Lines that are at right angles (90°) to each other.
radius- The radius of a circle is the length of the line from the center to any point on its edge.
vertical lines - A vertical line is one the goes straight up and down
CNC MANUFACTURING VOCABULARY
3-D (three-dimensional) - a three-dimensional form; also : an image or a picture produced in it
automation - automatically controlled operation
Cartesian coordinate system -a coordinate system that specifies each point uniquely in a plane by a pair of numerical coordinates
computer numerical control (CNC) - CNC is the acronym for Computer Numerical Control. This is machining with the use of computer automation (mills, lathes, or routers).
computer-aided drafting (CAD) - Computer Aided Drawing programs used to create drawings and 3D models of the parts we want to machine.
computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) - use of computer software to control machine tools to manufacture a product or part.
computer-integrated manufacturing (CIM) - manufacturing approach of using computers to control the entire production process.
engineering materials - Comparing some typical properties of common engineering materials like steel, plastics, ceramics and composites.
Industrial Revolution - transition to new manufacturing processes in the period from about 1760 to sometime between 1820 and 1840, inspired by the introduction of the steam engine.
industry - Industry is the production of a good or service within an economy.
primary processes - taking raw materials (from Primary Industry) and using them to make industrial materials.
raw materials - A material or substance used in the primary production or manufacturing of a good. Raw materials are often natural resources such as oil, iron and wood.
safety - freedom from harm or danger : the state of being safe
secondary processes - Secondary manufacturing refers to further processing of products that have already undergone some manufacturing.
